Calvin ACHA D1 Hockey Shuts Out Hope to Advance to GL6 Tournament Title Game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin defeated rival Hope 1-0 in front of a standing room only crowd Friday night in the GL6 Tournament semifinals at Patterson Ice Center.

Calvin will play for a GL6 Tournament title Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. against Adrian at Patterson Ice Center.

Calvin broke through for the only goal of the game at the 10:10 mark of the second period as senior Krzyzstof Petryla slipped a shot past Hope goaltender Sebastian Wigfield after receiving a well-placed pass from senior teammate Steven Ickes. The Petryla goal was part of a second period where the Knights swarmed the Hope goalmouth with Wigfield turning aside shot after shot until Petryla broke through.

The Knights pressed for a clinching goal in the third period but were turned aside by Wigfield and the Hope defense. With just over seven minutes left in regulation, Calvin was forced to dig in on defense as the Knights were whistled a five-minute major penalty, giving the Flying Dutchmen a lengthy power play.

Calvin killed off the five minute penalty with expert defense, threatening to score shorthanded on two occasions. Hope pulled its goalie with under two minutes left, whistling a series of shots at goal that Calvin sophomore goalie Aidan Feddema turned aside. Calvin took control of the puck in the final seconds and nearly scored an empty net goal with the clock running out in a 1-0 Knight win.

Calvin outshot Hope 39-14 with Feddema collecting the shutout in goal. Wigfield had 38 saves for Hope.

The victory bumps Calvin's overall season record to 20-7-2, marking the fourth straight 20-win campaign for the Knights.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was such a fun atmosphere for the guys to play in," said Calvin head coach Josh Petrusma. "It's always a bit more exciting when it's Calvin and Hope. I was very happy with our game in all three zones tonight. Effort and commitment were exceptionally high, and we played with a toughness that's required in playoff hockey. We're looking forward to the opportunity Saturday night to play for a tournament title against another very good opponent."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Adrian at 8:15 p.m. in the GL6 Tournament Championship game at Patterson Ice Center.
