Calvin Football Rolls to 88-6 Win Over Oberlin in Season Opener

OBERLIN, Oh. – Year two of the Calvin University football program opened with an emphatic 88-6 road win at Oberlin College Saturday afternoon. The Knights rolled up more than 650 yards of total offense while limiting the Yeoman to just 171 yards of offense including a negative 56 yards on the ground.

Calvin achieved new program single-game records for points (88) and overall yards on offense (656).

Calvin led 24-0 after one quarter of play and 40-0 at halftime as it cruised to victory.

Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro (Franklin, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian Academy) had a strong debut for Calvin. The Samford University transfer completed 17 of 26 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. All three scoring strikes went to the hands of sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) who scored on scoring strikes of 13 yards, 24 yards and six yards. Michmerhuizen's first touchdown gave Calvin a 6-0 lead and the Knights capitalized on a trick two-point conversion play to sophomore Carter Bylsma (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS). The Bylsma conversion run gave Calvin an 8-0 lead. Michmerhuizen finished with seven receptions for 107 yards. Seven different Calvin receivers recorded at least one reception in the win.

Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna, Mich./Ravenna HS) made a big impact on offense. Starting in his first collegiate game at running back, Hogan rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. His day was highlighted by a broken-field 65-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the third quarter. Hogan also had four receptions and returned one kickoff for 32 yards.

Sophomore Nick Earles (Greenville, Mich./Greenville HS) ran for a career-high 81 yards on 11 carries while scoring three touchdowns. Sophomore Kaleb Dubowski (Big Rapids, Mich./Big Rapids HS) had 64 yards on the ground including a 48-yard touchdown run. Freshman speedster Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin HS) added a 34-yard touchdown run in his collegiate debut while returning a kickoff for 34 yards.

Junior Alexander Minnehan (Lakeville, N.Y. / Livonia) returned the first punt for a touchdown in program history, racing through several would-be tacklers for a 59-yard score in the third quarter.

On defense, sophomore Caiden Bolduc (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) had a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The interception was the first "pick six" in Calvin football history.

Freshman Leighton Kolk (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) had nine carries for 51 yards in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Alex VanSweden (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) added 45 yards on four carries. Sophomore Drake Irwin (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) came on at quarterback in the second half, completing 2 of 5 passes for 37 yards.

VanSweden stepped up on special teams, blocking an Oberlin punt in the third quarter that helped set up a short tochdown drive by the Knights.

Sophomore Carson Schnurstein (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) had a big game on defense with 14 tackles (9 solo/5 assist) including three sacks. Bolduc had two sacks with sophomore Breylon Cox (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) contributing one sack.

COACHES COMMENT: "I am very proud of our players and staff for the way they prepared and performed today," said Calvin head football coach Trent Figg. "We have a great group of young men that love to compete and play the game. We had a physical fall camp and it showed today in the way our guys attacked in all three phases of the game. There will be lots to take away from the film and get cleaned up before a big test next week. A huge thank you to Knight Nation and all the fans that made the trip to Oberlin and watched online. Your support is felt and appreciated by our players more than you know. I am so proud of our young men for the way they carry themselves on and off the field. God Bless and Go Knights!"

NEXT UP: Calvin will host (1-0) Concordia of Wisconsin next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Calvin Soccer Stadium in its home opener. The game will mark the first-ever football contest on Calvin's campus and will be presented by Northwestern Mutual.
