Calvin Hockey Falls to Adrian in ACHA D1 National Tournament

BOX SCORE

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Calvin's run through the ACHA Division I National Tournament came to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Knights suffered a 6-2 loss to GL6 rival Adrian. The loss came in the Round of 16 of the tournament and marked the third consecutive year the Knights have bowed to the Bulldogs in their second tournament contest.

Saturday's contest marked the fourth meeting of the year between the two teams including the second in two weeks.

Adrian scored just 3:18 into the contest off a shot by Matthew DiCesare but Calvin senior Steven Ickes answered with a goal just over a minute later with senior Ethan Best and freshman Daniel Siso drawing assists on the play.

Matteo Turrin gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead midway through the first period and then grabbed a 3-1 lead on another goal by DiCesare – this time on a power play with 2:31 left in the period.

Calvin cashed in on a power play of its own 45 seconds into the second period with sophomore Nick Justice whipping home a shot on feeders from freshman Daniel Siso and Ickes to make it 3-2.

Calvin pushed for the equalizer but was hit by a penalty four minutes later and Adrian made good on the opportunity, scoring a power play goal by Dylan Gajewski. Cash Regan made it 5-2 for Adrian in the closing minutes of the second period.

Calvin pressured in the third period but could not find the back of the net. Calvin pulled its goaltender with a last-chance push. Adrian was able to gain control of the puck and score an empty-net goal to seal the win.

Adrian finished with a 33-22 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Aidan Feddema had 18 saves for Calvin in goal.

Saturday's game was played at the St. Louis Ice Zone. The Knights were making their third straight appearance at the ACHA Division I National Tournament including their fourth in program history. The Knights have qualified for five ACHA Division I National Tournaments overall with the 2019-20 wiped out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

COACH JOSH PETRUSMA ON THE ADRIAN GAME: "It was an unfortunate end to a special season. I'm so proud of the way this team competed and the level of effort given from each of them. It didn't go our way today, but we skated off the ice knowing that we left it all out there. We have to give Adrian credit as well. They are a quality team with a lot of experience and they played well today."

COACH JOSH PETRUSMA ON THE SEASON OVERALL: "This was the most challengin season in program history as we lost our coach and the person that built Calvin hockey into what it is today. Yet through the sadness that brought on, we found a way to continue. Twenty five wins, multiple victory over Top-5 team and another win at the National Tournament along with countless memories. The support from the alumni, families and the university was incredible. We are so grateful to be a part of this amazing community and we can't wait for next season."
