Calvin Men's Lacrosse Drops Spring Trip Finale


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Calvin fell 15-12 in in its spring trip finale against Sewanee University Friday afternoon. The Knights are now 3-3 on the year.

Calvin held an early 3-1 lead but Sewanee (5-3) scored nine unanswered goals to build a 10-3 third quarter lead.

Calvin scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to close to within three at 13-10 with 2:41 left to play but the deficit was too large for the Knights to overcome.

Sewanee won 16 of 29 faceoff opportunities and forced the Knights into 23 turnovers.
Junior Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) led the Calvin scoring attack with four goals as he collected his second straight hat trick including the eighth of his collegiate career.

Senior Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) had two goals, two assists and two ground balls. Senior Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) had two goals and three ground balls.

Scoring single goals for Calvin were senior Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa. Allentown Central Catholic), sophomore Theodore Hollebeek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), junior David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and freshman Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS). Senior Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif. Trabuco Hills) had a pair of assists. Senior Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla. Oviedo), sophomore Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich. St. Mary's Catholic Central) and sophomore Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif. Crean Lutheran) all had one assist.
Junior Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS), sophomore Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio Worthington Kilbourne) and senior goalie Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) all had four ground balls. Schaumburg had 10 saves in goal. Sewanee held a 45-31 shots at goal advantage.

COACHES COMMENT: "I was really proud of the way we battled," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "The guys rallied after we hit some adversity and stuck together and played through it. Sewanee is a great team and we have a lot to build on from this game. We are ready to come home get back to work to prepare for two great opponents next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Southwestern of Texas next Friday at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.  Calvin will then host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 5 p.m.
