GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin opened its weekend slate with a 4-3 overtime victory over the visiting Grand Valley State Lakers Friday night at Eagles Ice Center.
Freshman
Tony Eaton whipped in a shot from the right side two minutes into the overtime session to lift the Knights to victory.
Calvin overcame a multitude of penalties in the contest to gain the win.
Calvin struck first, scoring six minutes into the opening period on a goal out in front by sophomore
Ethan Poole who crammed home a feed from sophomore
Joel Fonovic. Grand Valley State came back to tie the game 1-1 on a goal by Tyler Husted off the draw late in the first period.
The #24 Lakers gained a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second period as Yarne Vaerewyck got loose through the center and buried a breakaway opportunity.
Calvin countered three minutes later as freshman
Dario Sacino buried a shot off the faceoff to make it 2-2.
Junior
Steven Ickes gave the Knights a 3-2 lead, banging in a power play 8:39 into the second period.
The score remained that way until the Lakers tied the game 3-3 on a shot by Kamryne Hellman five-and-a-half minutes into the third period.
Neither team scored again in regulation, sending the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Calvin made good use of the extra ice as its 3-on-3 attack swung into action. Calvin's winning goal came on a rush through the right wing by
Nick Justice. Justice circled the Grand Valley goal, found Fonovic coming right in on goal. Fonovic slid a pass over to Eaton who one-timed a shot into the net for the win.
Carlos Siso was the winning goaltender for the Knights.
The victory bumps Calvin's season record to 20-5-0 with the Knights hitting the 20-win plateau for the third straight season.
COACHES COMMENT: "Tonight was a great lesson forus in the importance of consistency," said Calvin head coach
Josh Petrusma. "We let our emotions get the best of us tonight. You can't take a night off in our league we were lucky to come away with a win against a quality opponent. Every game is critical at this time of the year and we will need to be focused and committed to getting back on track in the next one."
