Longtime former Calvin head hockey coach has received two prestigious honors from the GL6 Conference.
The winner of the inaugural GL6 Postseason Tournament will receive the
Mike Petrusma Cup. The tournament is taking place this weekend at Adrian College. This is the first year of the GL6 Conference which includes teams from Adrian, Calvin, Davenport, Grand Valley State, Purdue-Northwest and Roosevelt.
GL6 member schools voted unanimously to name the GL6 Tournament trophy after longtime Calvin University Head Coach
Mike Petrusma. Each year, the teams in the GL6 playoffs will now be competing for the "
Mike Petrusma Cup."
Petrusma was a 28-year head coach of the Calvin ACHA hockey program, leading the Knights at all three ACHA levels. He passed away from an extended illness in late November of last year. Up to that point, Petrusma had guided Calvin's ACHA D1 hockey team to an 11-1-0 overall record. In addition to naming the GL6 Tournament trophy after him, the GL6 institutions voted
Mike Petrusma as the inaugural GL6 Coach of the Year.
Calvin is currently under the leadership of Petrusma's son Josh who is the interim head coach of the Knights Calvin is scheduled to play in the GL6 Tournament semifinals Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. The game will be played at Adrian's Arrington Ice Arena.
