GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's tennis team earned another non-conference win by a 6-1 final over Illinois Tech on Saturday in Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.
Calvin (2-3) earned the point in doubles by taking two of the three matches. The top seeded team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and Mário Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) won 6-1, followed by a 6-3 win in the number-two match by the team of
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini).
Illinois Tech (2-4) was able to take the third match in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), but the Knights had already earned the one doubles point.
The Knights continued their strong play in singles, with Alipio (6-2, 6-0), Sartori (7-6 (7-3), 6-0), Broek (6-1, 6-1) and
Emmanuel Henao (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") (6-2, 6-4) each winning in straight sets.
In the number-two singles match,
Caleb Bartels (Belton, Mo./Kansas City Christian) came back after losing the first set 6-4 to win the second set 6-0 and then the third-set tiebreaker 10-8 to give the Knights five singles wins.
