GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 11 Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team swept a weekend series from Davenport to close out its regular season campaign on a winning note. The Knights are now 23-5-0 heading into GL6 Conference Tournament play. At 23 wins, Calvin has now matched a single-season record for victories in a season as an ACHA Division I program.
Calvin opened the weekend with a 5-3 victory over Davenport Friday night at Eagles Ice Center. Calvin held a 3-1 lead heading into the final period of play only to see Davenport score twice to even the score 3-3. A clutch go-ahead goal by
Tony Eaton late in regulation and an empty-net goal by
Owen Schrader cemented the win for the Knights.
Daniel Siso opened the scoring, banging home a shot off feeds from Schrader and
Steven Ickes 4:27 into the contest.
Davenport tied the game on a goal midway through the second period but
Holden Pratt and Ickes scored goals in the closing minutes of the second period to put the Knights up 3-1 after two.
Lou Vesperini and
Joel Fonovic helped set up Pratt for the go-ahead goal with 3:53 left in the second.
Nick Justice and
Daniel Siso then set up Ickes for Calvin's third goal of the game with just 2:18 left in the period.
Davenport made it 3-2 on a goal 9:13 into the third and then tied it up less than a minute later, setting up the late heroics by Eaton and Schrader. Eaton's game-winning goal was assisted by Ickes and Justice.
Daniel Siso and Ickes assisted on Schrader's empty-net tally.
Calvin outshot Davenport 38-27.
Carlos Siso went the whole way in goal for the Knights, recording 24 saves.
Calvi then turned around and defeated Davenport 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the nearby Patterson Ice Center. Calvin goals were scored by Vesperini, Fonovic,
Krzyzstof Petryla, and Pratt.
Adam Yost was Calvin's goalie. Yost picked up the win and recorded 22 saves.
Calvin will now prepare for the inaugural GL6 Conference Tournament with tournament play set to begin February 27.
