GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team swept Ferris State University on Saturday night winning 9-0 at home. Calvin is now 5-0-1 on the season.
Despite the commanding win, Calvin got off to a slow start, scoring just a single goal in the 1st period.
Zach Westrick scored for the Knights with 8:12 to play in the period with an assist by
Nathan Sova.
Brock Hearth opened up Calvin's scoring in the 2nd period just under 4 minutes into the period. Josh VanSchepen assisted. With 15 minutes to play in the 2nd,
Sam Robinson scored to put Calvin ahead by 3.
Ian Schweigert assisted.
Owen Hodel scored with just over a minute to play in the period, with assists from
Nathan Sova, and
Brady Keats.
Calvin continued to gain momentum going into the final period with 5 more goals.
Sergey Yakunin scored the opening goal of the period with 15:13 to play.
Zach Westrick scored his 2nd of the game, with 13:45 to play, and Yakunin quickly followed up with his 2nd of the game with 7:57 to play.
Brock Hearth closed off the game with goals with 6:40, and 51 seconds left to play to complete his hat trick, and close off the home victory.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "We came out a bit slow tonight to finish the weekend on a high note. Overall, I am happy with how we played this weekend. We are starting to click as we get into the middle of our schedule and I'm liking what I'm seeing. We're excited for another great test against MSU next weekend."
NEXT UP: Calvin heads to East Lansing on Friday, November 14th, to take on the Michigan State Spartans. The game will be at 8:30 p.m.
