GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 12th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to four with 74-49 win over Heidelberg University on Friday night at Van Noord Arena.
It was a clash in styles between the two teams, as Calvin (4-1) looked to dominate the paint on the offensive end while Heidelberg (2-3) spread the floor looking for opportunities from beyond the three-point arc. The Knights were able to hold the Student Princes to 9-36 shooting from three-point range while outscoring them 44-10 in points in the paint.
The undersized Student Princes swarmed Calvin center
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) down low on every touch, giving more space for the Knights'
Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) and
Luka Ressler (Caledonia, Mich./Catholic Central) to operate and the two seniors came up big throughout the game for the Knights.
Ressler helped the Knights get going on the offensive end with a pair of first half three-pointers on the way to eight early points, while Winkle scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half to push the Knights to a 36-21 halftime lead.
After shooting 5-22 from downtown in the first half, Heidelberg made a couple early deep shots in the second half to cut the Calvin lead to nine (42-33) but could not get any closer the rest of the way as the Knights continued to get into the paint and finish near the rim.
Winkle continued his strong game with 10 more points in the second half while both Winkle and Ressler recorded four assists after the break. The Knights also got a strong second-half performance from
Justin McIllwain, who dropped in a pair of jumpers off the bench for four big points to help put the game away.
Winkle finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-9 shooting and recorded a career high seven assists to go with nine rebounds. Ressler scored 13 points to go with eight assists, while Overway finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
On the defensive end, the Knights held the Student Princes to 27.6 percent overall and 9-36 from beyond the arc.
COACH'S COMMENT: "This team has two dynamic guards," Calvin head coach
Bill Sall said. "If you look at their numbers, they're unbelievable. I thought we did a great job all night on those guys and really limiting dribble penetration. We were really physical with them and made sure they couldn't get to their spots. That was great to see. We've now played five games and each game has been a different style of basketball. This was really the first team that's come on a hard double with Jalen, and we got a lot of good shots."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball will return to action on Saturday, December 6, when it hosts 17th-ranked UW-Oshkosh at 3:00 PM at Van Noord Arena.
