Calvin ACHA D3 Hockey Team Skates to 4-4 Overtime Tie With No. 5 GVSU

BAUER, Mich. – Calvin skated to a 4-4 overtime tie with Grand Valley State Friday night at Griff's Georgetown Ice Arena.

Grand Valley entered the game ranked sixth nationally. Having not played the minimum five games yet to be ranked, Calvin came in without a national ranking.

The two teams were tied 2-2 after one period of play. Oleg Grishatov and Henry Holleman scored Calvin's first period goals.

Junior Josiah Lambers lifted Calvin into a 3-2 lead with a goal in the opening minute of the second period. Grand Valley state struck back to tie the game at 3 on a goal midway through the second. Calvin's Myles Radersma then lit the lap with just 24 seconds left in the second period to give Calvin a 4-3 advantage.

The Knights were handcuffed by penalties throughout the contest and Grand Valley State finally found the tying goal on a power play tally with just 6:38 left in regulation.

Neither team scored in overtime despite both teams being whistled for penalties in the extra five-minute frame.

Calvin held a 38-31 shots on goal advantage. Senior Ryan Woroz had 27 saves in net for the Knights.

Calvin was whistled for nine penalties totaling 20 minutes.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a solid result against a really good Grand Valley State team," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "The disappointing thing was how many penalties we took. We totaled up an entire 20-minute period of penalty minutes. The fact that we led 4-3 late in the game was remarkable with how many times we were in the penalty box. We've got to do a better job of staying disciplined. The great thing about this game is we get to play again tomorrow night against the same Grand Valley team. We are hoping to put our best foot forward tomorrow night."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Grand Valley State Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Eagles Ice Center.
