GRAND RAPIDS Mich.- The Calvin University ACHA D1 hockey team defeated Hope College 4-1 in front of an overflow crwod at home on Halloween night. Calvin is now 5-1-0 on the season and ranked 10th in the nation. Hope entered the game ranked 19th.
Calvin's
Daniel Siso scored the 1st and only goal of the opening period with assists from
Hayden Zimmerman and
Owen Schrader. Siso scored with 16:07 left to play in the period to give the Knights the lead at home.
Calvin really picked it up in the 2nd period, pounding the net and putting in three goals past the Hope defense.
Krzyzstof Petryla scored just 40 seconds into the period with
Hayden Zimmerman collecting his 2nd assist, and
Marshall Beaker also assisting. Beaker scored the 3rd goal of the game with 15:53 left to play while
Joel Fonovic and
Lou Vesperini assisted.
Steven Ickes put Calvin ahead by four on a power play with 4:44 left to play in the period.
Hayden Zimmerman made a hat trick on assists, with
Trent Benedict helping with the 2nd assist.
Hope scored its only goal of the game with 17:54 left to play. Brady Breit scored for the Dutch while Cade Pratt and Trevor Davis assisted. In true rivalry fashion both teams spent a lot of time in the penalty box, with both Hope and Calvin having 9 penalties.
COACHES COMMENT: "First off I want to thank the fans and support staff for an incredible night. This rivalry is always entertaining and our fans brought it to another level tonight. I thought we played a solid end to end game and executed on the game plan well. I was very happy with our commitment to our defensive zone through high effort and blocking shots. Holland."
