Calvin Football Beaten by Bulldogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin dropped a 48-17 decision to an unbeaten Adrian team Saturday afternoon at Calvin Soccer Stadium.

Adrian (6-0 overall, 3-0 MIAA) led 35-0 at halftime and never looked back in pulling away for the win. Calvin (4-2 overall, 1-2 MIAA) came up with a third quarter field goal and a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to put points on the scoreboard.

Calvin held early momentum as its defense got a stop on the first series of the game, forcing Adrian into a three-and-out and punt. The Knights took over the ball on their own 28 and moved smartly down to the Adrian 29-yard line. On first down, the Adrian defense forced a fumble on a Calvin pitch play and recovered the loose ball to stymie the Knight drive.

Adrian moved 60 yards in eight plays to score a touchdown on a 16-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Noah Beaudrie that helped put the Bulldogs up 7-0. Beaudrie proceeded to run for another touchdown and throw for three more in helping stake Adrian to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Calvin's offense was limited to 114 yards of total offense in the first half including just 57 yards on the ground.

Calvin was able to get on the scoreboard on a 43-yard field goal by sophomore Logan Nap (Lawton, Mich./Lawton HS) in the third quarter that made the score 38-3. The Nap field goal was set up by an acrobatic interception along the sideline by sophomore linebacker Carson Schnurstein (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) as Schnurstein leaped in front of a pass by Beaudrie and came down with the ball just inside the far sideline. The interception was the first of the year for Beaudrie who came into the contest as one of the national leaders in completion percentage and quarterback passing efficiency.

Sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Franklin, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian) later connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone early in the fourth quarter that made the score 41-10. The touchdown was set up by a 29-yard pass from Vaccaro to Michmerhuizen that put the Knights in the red zone.

Sophomore quarterback Drake Irwin (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) came on for Calvin's final drive and led the Knights to a five-play, 70-yard touchdown march. Irwin connected with former high school teammate McCoy Baxter (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) on a 41-yard pass that put the Knights on the Bulldog 13-yard line. Two plays later, sophomore Hayden Slegers (Ontario, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) powered in from two yards out for a touchdown to close out the scoring. Slegers carried the ball four times on the scoring drive which included runs of 13 and 11 yards.

Slegers led the Knights in rushing with 41 yards on eight carries. Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna, Mich./Ravenna HS) had 36 yards on 12 carries and sophomore Nick Earles (Greenville, Mich./Greenville HS) 21 yards on nine carries.

Vaccarro was sacked four times by a relentless Adrian defense but managed to complete 14 of 25 passes for 151 yards while also rushing for 17 yards on 13 scrambles.

Michmerhuizen had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Baxter had three catches for 43 yards , Hogan five catches for 40 yards and sophomore Seth Anderson (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) four catches for 20 yards.

Schnurstein matched a career high with 16 tackles. Sophomore Caden Kolanowski (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) came up with a career-high 14 tackles while sophomore Kaiden McCullough (Allendale, Mich./Allendale HS) had eight tackles and one sack.

Beaudrie was 25 of 33 passing for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Braiden Whitaker hauled in 14 catches for 164 yards to lead the receiving game. Tyler Morgan ran for 72 yards on the ground for Adrian.

COACHES COMMENT: "A credit to Coach Palka and their team for executing their game plan. They were the more physical team today," said Calvin head football coach Trent Figg. "We did some things today that were uncharacteristic of our team today and it cost us early. We had some penalties and substitution things that we have not done before. We've got to get those things cleaned up. A credit to Knight Nation for the support today. Our fans came out again today and we are thankful for that. We are looking forward to another home game next week in front of them."
