LYNCHBURG, VA.- The 10th ranked Calvin University ACHA D1 hockey team started off the weekend double header on the road with a bang, taking down the 3rd ranked Liberty University on the road in overtime 4-3 on Friday January 17th. Calvin is now 18-3 on the year.
Friday's game was played in front of an enthusiastic sellout crowd of more than 4,000 fans at the LaHaye Ice Center.
Liberty's Tucker Shields scored the only goal of the 1st period from Liam Cox-Smith and Hayden DeMars, with under a minute to play in the period. Calvin Goalie
Adam Yost stopped 7 of 8 shots on goal while Liberty Goalie Nicholas Bernstein stopped all 8 of Calvin's shots on goal.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the 2nd period,
Tony Eaton scored the equalizer for the Knights unassisted. Liberty went on to score two straight shorthanded goals to regain the lead from the Knights. The 1st goal of the two was scored by Tucker Shields from Truett Olsen and Michael Adamek in the 10th minute and the 2nd was scored in the 14th minute by Michael Adamek from Hayden DeMars to put the Flames in front 3-1 going into the 3rd period. Liberty had 8 shots on goal in the 2nd period while Calvin had 20.
Joel Fonovic scored in the 14th minute of the final period from
Holden Pratt and
Ethan Pool to bring the game back within a goal for the Knights on a power play. With 1:03 remaining in regulation
Steven Ickes scored the game-tying goal on a power play from
Krzyzstof Petryla and
Tony Eaton to send the game to overtime. Calvin had 9 shots on goal in the 3rd period while Liberty had 6.
In overtime both teams had chances to put it away, with Liberty putting 2 shots on goal and Calvin putting 3 shots on goal. However
Steven Ickes again came to the Knights rescue scoring the game winning goal 3:06 into Overtime. Krzyzstof Petryala and goalie
Adam Yost were in on the assist.
NEXT UP: Calvin will again Play Liberty In Lynchburg on Saturday January 18th to complete the double header. The Game will be at 7pm.
