Calvin Football Rolls to 66-12 Victory at Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. – Calvin shook off an initial bumpy start to roll to a 66-12 victory at Anderson University Saturday afternoon.

A Calvin punting attempt went awry in the first quarter, setting the host Ravens up with the ball on the Calvin eight-yard line. Moments later, Anderson scored on a short passing play but missed on the two-point conversion to take a 6-0 first quarter lead.

The lead was short-lived for Anderson (1-2) as Calvin (2-1) scored on a 62-yard touchdown pass from senior Chase Bradman (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian HS) to freshman Hunter Hogan (Ravenna, Mich./Ravenna HS) The point-after by freshman Sal Ruffino (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) gave Calvin a 7-6 lead it would carry through one quarter.

Calvin exploded for 24 second quarter points to build a 31-6 halftime lead. The second quarter surge was ignited by an Anderson fumble on a punt return that was recovered by freshman Rowan Stewart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). Senior Jaier Harden (Grand Rapids, Mich.)/Innovation Central HS) then raced 20 yards for a touchdown to put the Knights up 14-6. A 28-yard Ruffino field goal bumped Calvin's lead to 17-6 and a 7-yard touchdown pass by Bradman to freshman Carter Bylsma (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) put the Knights up 24-6. Bradman closed off the first half scoring with a 13-yard touchdown pass to freshman Luke Michmerhuizen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS).

In the third quarter, Harden broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run. Freshman quarterback Drake Irwin (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) got into the action midway through the third, plunging in with a one-yard touchdown run.

Freshman Jackson Cook (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) added a one-yard touchdown run of his own to make it 52-6.

In the fourth quarter, Irwin hooked up with his old high school teammate, freshman McCoy Baxter (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Nick Earles (Greenville, Mich./Greenville HS) closed out the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run.

COACHES COMMENT: "It's great to get the first road win under our belt," said Calvin head football coach Trent Figg. "I am very proud of the effort that our players played with today. The game started out sloppier than we would have liked, but once we got going, we were able to execute and put the game away in the second half. It was great to see a bunch of guys play significant minutes in the game today. I am so thankful for every player and every coach in our organization that for their hard work each week to prepare. A big thank you to Knight Nation and all of our fans that made the trip. We are excited to start MIAA play this coming week. God Bless and Go Knights!"

NEXT UP: Calvin will now prepare to travel to Kalamazoo College next Saturday for its conference opener. The MIAA contest is slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Angell Field and will mark the first night game at Kalamazoo since September 17, 1960.
