HOWELL, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team opened its 2024-25 campaign with an impressive 5-0 win over a much-improved Cleary University team Friday night.
Junior
Krzyzstof Petryla led the Knights with a hat-trick performance, scoring once in the first period and twice in the second period to give the Knights a 3-0 lead after two periods of play.
Sophomore
Joel Fonovic scored early in the third and freshman
Bryce Grandbois added a final goal in the closing minutes to cap off the win.
Fonovic picked up one assist on the night as did junior
Steven Ickes, junior
Alim Darmenov and junior
Ethan Best.
Junior
Carlos Siso had a stellar night in between the pipes, recording 31 saves in goal and picking up the shutout win.
COACHES COMMENT: "Good start to the season against a much-improved Cleary team," said Calvin head hockey coach
Mike Petrusma. "They (Cleary) will be contenders to win their conference this season.
Carlos Siso was terrific in net and turned aside any chances Cleary had tonight."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Cleary on Saturday night at Eagles Ice Center with opening puck drop set for 7:30 p.m.
