Calvin Softball Sweeps to Cap Off Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Fl. - Today the Calvin softball team finished its spring trip string with wins over UMass Dartmouth and Gordon.

GAME 1
CALVIN 2, UMASS DARTMOUTH 0

In their first matchup of the day the Knights looked to take on UMass Dartmouth. Calvin, the designated home team for the game, got their first baserunners in the bottom of the second inning when senior Emilie Gist (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) singled to left field. Tory Decker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) followed that up with a single up the middle but unfortunately the runners were stranded and the score remained 0-0.

In the bottom of the third the Knights got things rolling with Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) delivered a single up the middle to give Calvin a baserunner. Sophomore Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) then stepped into the batter's box and smacked a triple to right center and scored Mougin. That triple was also the fourteenth of Dole's career, enough to tie Calvin softball the all-time career triples record. Back on the field Gist sent a long sacrifice fly to left field to bring in another run for the Knights.

On defense, led by sophomore pitcher Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland), the Knights locked in and allowed very few chances for Dartmouth. Ludema recorded six strikeouts and only allowed two hits as Calvin went on to claim the 2-0 victory.

GAME 2
CALVIN 7, GORDON 0

For their second game of the day the Knights matched up against Fighting Scots of Gordon College. Action began for Calvin in the top of the third when Mougin led off the inning by beating out a bunt down the line. Senior Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) followed that up by beating out a bunt of her own and moving Mougin all the way to third. Glass then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Calvin. A single from freshman Aubrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) brought in one run before a sacrifice line drive to center field brought in the second. Calvin's final run of the inning came when Emily Sweetland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) singled through the left side to score Herder and give the Knights a 3-0 lead.

Things were quiet on both sides of the ball until the top of the seventh inning when pinch hitters Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Ali Schultz (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) got back to back singles to put two runners on base for the Knights. After a ground ball moved them into scoring position Herder laid down a bunt that she beat out at first and allowed Gaastra to cross the plate. A single up the middle by Dole scored Herder before Calvin rounded out their scoring when Decker singled to bring in Dole and extend the lead to 7-0.

In the circle, sophomore pitcher Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) threw her first career no-hitter as she struck out eight batters and only allowed two runners on base.

COACHES COMMENT: "I am really pleased with how we finished the week," said Becky Hilgert. "Not allowing a run in 14 innings and playing almost error free was the key for today. All week we had contributions offensively from up and down the lineup. It was a true team effort all week and our pitching staff really rose to the occasion and never let a stressful moment snowball into something bigger. We are excited to get back home for a few good practices to clean up a few areas and then off to Kentucky to face some top notch competition."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Friday, March 15th when they travel to Elizabethtown, KY to compete in the Pioneer Classic. They will play their first game of the day against Transylvania at 1:15 p.m. and Spalding at 3:30 p.m.
