ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin University men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season to a tough Carthage College team on Friday to close its spring break trip at the USTA campus.
Calvin's (7-1) lone point of the match came in number-three doubles, where the team of
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and
Emmanuel Henao (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") won 8-2.
Carthage (11-2) took the other two doubles contests 8-5 and 8-4 to head into singles with a 2-1 overall lead.
In singles, the Firebirds won the first four matches in straight sets.
Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) lost in a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3). Henao also took his number-six match to a third set where he lost 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-7).
COACH'S COMMENT: "We ran into a really tough opponent today in Carthage," Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross said. "They are really talented and well coached. But we're happy to get through out spring break with a 3-1 record."
