ANGOLA, Ind. – The sixth-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team lost its MIAA Tournament semifinal match-up against Hope College 83-68 on Friday night at Trine University.
Calvin (22-4) started strong as it raced out to an 8-3 early lead, but early foul trouble to both
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and
Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) helped the Flying Dutchmen take control from there as it shot 48.3 percent overall from the field in the first half.
The Knights hung around with the help of 9-9 shooting from the free throw line, and
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) made a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Calvin deficit to 36-31 at the half.
Bult led Calvin with 11 points in the first half, while Gabe Quillan and Tanner Wiegerink combined for 23 points to lead Hope (21-6).
The Flying Dutchmen looked to put the Knights away early in the second half as they connected on four straight three-pointers as part of a 14-5 run to start the half on the way to a 14-point lead.
Calvin would not go away quietly, however, as it chipped away thanks to a pair of three-pointers from
Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) to cut the deficit to 56-54 with 9:21 remaining.
The Flying Dutchmen had one final run in them, however, as they pushed their lead to 14 heading into the final minutes on the way to securing the win.
Quillan was the player of the night for the Flying Dutchmen, scoring 31 points and shooting 7-10 from beyond the three-point arc. In the second half, Quillan scored 19 points and made five of his six attempts from distance.
The Knights finished the game shooting 40.0 percent from the field while Hope finished at 51.7 percent overall and 50.0 percent (11-22) from beyond the arc. In the second half, the Flying Dutchmen shot 55.2 percent overall and made eight of 12 attempts from downtown.
Egekeze and Bult led the Knights with 14 points apiece. Overway finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season, while
Jordan Scott (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and Winkle scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench.
