GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin Knights defeated Grand Valley State university 4-1 at home on Friday night in a GL6 matchup. Calvin improved to 11-1 after the victory.
The game featured a matchup of nationally-ranked teams as Calvin came in ranked 7
th nationally with Grand Valley State ranked 20
th.
Neither team was able to capitalize in the 1st period, helped by strong performances by both goalies. Calvin's
Adam Yost made 11 saves while GV's Adrian Morales made 8 saves.
With 3:05 left in the 2nd period
Ethan Pool scored for the Knights with assists from
Lou Vesperini and
Tony Eaton. Calvin had 11 shots on goal in the 2nd period while the Lakers had 9.Â
The 3rd period was explosive, with Calvin scoring 3 goals and giving up one, despite having the lowest total shots on goal compared to either of the previous periods. Just over a minute into the period
Steven Ickes scored for the Knights from
Krzyzstof Petryla and
Dario Sacino.
Ethan Pool followed up with his 2nd score of the game with 15:17 left to play from
Holden Pratt and
Tony Eaton. Ethan Hellman was able to break up the Knights scoring spree with a goal of Grand Valley's own. He was assisted by Josh Suzio and Yarne Vaerewyck, on a power play.
Steven Ickes scored his 2nd of the game with 3:42 left to play from
Dario Sacino and
Krzyzstof Petryla to cap off an impressive win for the Knights. Calvin had 9 shots on goal in the 3rd period and Grand Valley had 5.

Josh Petrusma, "Grand Valley is a quality team, and they always play us tough. I was proud of our resolve tonight and our ability to battle through adversity. Despite taking too many unnecessary penalties, we were able to find a way to win against a good team."
