Calvin Men's Basketball Drops Rivalry Rematch With Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – Round two of the Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry went to the home team Saturday night as the Flying Dutchmen defeated the Knights 59-42.

Hope scored the first 11 points of the game and kept the Knights at bay for most of the contest.

Calvin (16-3 overall, 6-2 MIAA) crept within five at 16-11 and later within eight at 35-27 but Hope scored the final basket of the first half to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.

Calvin held Hope to 32 percent field goal shooting in the second half but converted just 5 of 25 (.200) of its own tries in the second half as Hope gradually pulled away for the win.

Calvin finished with a season-low in points and shot a season-low 25.5 percent from the floor in the contest. The Knights also were just 12 of 24 (.500) at the free throw line.

Hope held a 44-39 rebounding advantage including 9-8 on the offensive glass.

The Knights were led in scoring by senior Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Academy) with 13 points. Sophomore Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had seven points and 16 rebounds. Senior Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Il./Huntley HS) and junior Trip Riemersma (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East HS) chipped in with six points apiece.

Saturday's game was the 212th meeting between the two rivals with Hope leading the all-time series 110-102.

COACHES COMMENT: "Quite frankly they played good and we played miserably," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "We have to get back to the drawing board and figure some things out."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Alma next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. MIAA contest.
