Calvin ACHA D3 Hockey Team Plays Top-Ranked Grand Valley to 2-2 Overtime Tie

BAUER, Mich. - The 11th-ranked Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against top-ranked Grand Valley State Friday night at Griff's Georgetown Ice Arena.

The Knights played the host Lakers on even terms throughout the contest and used a clutch penalty shot save by sophomore Ryan Worosz with 17 seconds left in overtime to secure the tie.

After a scoreless first period, freshman Tomas Postal put Calvin up 1-0 on an unassisted goal 5:11 into the second period. Grand Valley countered with an equalizer just three-and-a-half minutes later.

Grand Valley grabbed a 2-1 lead just 2:13 into the third period forcing Calvin to press for the tying goal. Calvin struck gold with 5:53 left in regulation as freshman Sergey Yakunin ripped in a shot off assists from senior Joe Lugge and freshman Josiah Lambers.

The Knights pressured in the closing moments of regulation and had chances in overtime but could not strike for the winning goal. Pressing the attack, Calvin's defense got exposed for a short burst as a Laker defender grabbed a loose puck and began a clean break in on net. The Grand Valley attacker was hauled down while attempting a shot and moments later a penalty shot was awarded to the Lakers with just 17 seconds left in overtime.

Worosz stepped up to the challenge, smothering the penalty shot to keep the game tied with the final horn sounding seconds later.

Worosz finished the game with 37 saves. Grand Valley finished the contest with a 39-26 shots on goal advantage.

COACHES COMMENT: "Our guys played tremendously," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "We had a really good third period in our last game this past weekend against Central Maine. I told our guys to continue that momentum and keep the gravy train going. I thought our goalie played outstanding. We get to play them again tomorrow and I know the boys are hungry for another opportunity to play again."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Grand Valley State Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Eagles Ice Arena.
