GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team celebrated senior night as it welcomed the Tigers of Wittenburg for its last non-conference matchup of the season. The sixteenth-ranked Knights came into today's match with a 5-0-2 record and are coming off a 0-0 tie against Illinois Institute of Technology.
In the first forty five minutes both teams battled as they tried to create scoring opportunities. During the half Calvin outshot the Tigers 7-3 while junior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded two saves. However, neither team produced any quality chances and we went into halftime 0-0.
As the second half got underway both teams struggled to retain possession and get momentum. In the 60th minute the Knights saw an opening when Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was tripped up just outside the Tigers eighteen yard box. The spot was well within shooting range for Williams but unfortunately she put just a bit too much air under it and sent it over the crossbar.
With just over ten minutes left in the match the Knights earned a corner kick where Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) played the ball short for Williams. Williams took three quick touches to bring herself to the edge of the eighteen before sending a rocket into the top right corner of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
While the Tigers continued to attempt to get something going on their offensive end, the Calvin defense held strong and the Knights walked away with a 1-0 win. Calvin outshot Wittenburg 22-7 in the win.
After the match the Knights honored their senior class which included Williams, Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon), Rory Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic), and Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian). They also recognized their fifth year seniors in Karley Michmerhuizen (Grandville, Mich./Unity Christian) and Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian).
COACHES COMMENTS: "Happy to get a win today," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I thought Wittenburg came to compete a little harder than us. We need to regroup and come back next week with a renewed focus as we enter into the challenges of conference play."
