GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team opened its season off strong with a win over the Cleary University Cougars on Friday night, winning 8-2. 
 
The Knights opened the scoring with a goal from Keith Schenkel with 11:57 remaining in the first period. Despite 11 shots on goal by Calvin and 18 by Cleary neither team managed to put anything else in the back of the net.  
 
The Knights controlled the second period, putting two more goals past the Cougars defense. Noah Kramps just 20 seconds into the second period, followed by Maverick Baxtrom with 16:11 remaining in the second period. The Knights managed to keep the Cougars scoreless the entire second period. 
 
Calvin finished the game strong scoring five goals in the third period. Including a pair from the Knights sophomore forward Krzysztof Petryla. Ethan Pool, Joel Fanovic, and Noah Kramps also managed to light the lamp in the third. The Cougars also scored a couple goals in the third, Jonny Gardiner with 16:21 remaining and Cam Thomas with 8:21 left in the game. 
 
The Knights were led by solid performances from Krzysztof Petryla, who collected a pair of  goals and assists, Jacob Siebenga, with 4 assists, and Noah Kramps, who also had a pair of goals. 

The Knights were anchored by keeper Carlos Siso who let just 2 goals slip past.  
 
 
COACHES COMMENT: "Good start to our season. I thought we got better as the game went along," said Calvin head coach Mike Petrusma. "It's always nice to win the opener, and now we play our first road game of the season tomorrow night." 
 
NEXT UP: The Knights play on the road Saturday September 23, in a rematch against the Cleary University Cougars, at 7:30 p.m.
