Calvin Men's Tennis Falls to Hope in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. – The tournament trail came to an end for the Calvin men's tennis team as the Knights dropped a 5-0 decision at rival Hope Wednesday in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
Calvin concludes its 2023 season with an overall dual match record of 11-6.

Calvin pushed Hope early but dropped a pair of tight doubles matches. Hope picked up the first point with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, dropping the Calvin tandem of freshman Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) with Tyler Stafford and Matt Henkel picking up the win for Hope.

At No. 1 doubles, the Calvin tandem of freshmen Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had the match tied late before falling 8-6 to the Hope team of Jacob Burkett and Cameron Coates.

At No. 3 doubles Calvin's duo of juniors Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) played a nailbiter with Hope's Justin Fay and John Voss before ultimately falling 8-7 with the tiebreaking set going to Hope by a 7-5 score.

Burkett defeated Kim at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 while Coates defeated Calvin freshman Emmanuel Henao Estrada (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior School) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to clinch and end the match.

COACHES COMMENT: "It's always tough to end the season, particularly against a rival but credit Hope for playing well and picking up the early points," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross. "I'm proud of this team for how hard it competed throughout the season and getting back to the MIAA Tournament. We had a very young roster without a senior on the team and I thought this group pushed the program forward this year. We have a bright future ahead of us."
