DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Calvin University baseball team finished its spring Florida trip with a doubleheader split against Penn State-Altoona on Saturday. The Knights won game one 8-1 before dropping game two 1-0.

Calvin put together one of its best all around performances of the trip to take game one 8-1 over the Lions.
The Knights opened the scoring in the first inning on a
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) single that scored
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia), and the Knights added runs throughout the later innings to continue to add to their lead.
That would prove more than enough for starting pitcher
Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins), who allowed one run in the bottom of the first and then kept the Lions scoreless the rest of the way. Reynolds scattered eight hits and one walk in seven innings to earn the complete game win to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy),
Will Mueller (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and
Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) each finished with three hits to lead the offensive effort. Warners had two runs batted in (RBI), while Raymond added his 16th RBI of the trip.

The Knights got a strong pitching effort from
Connor Comiskey (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North), but could not generate enough offensive in a 1-0 defeat in game two.
Comiskey was terrific for the second straight start, allowing only one run in the second inning in his first career complete game. Comiskey went 7.0 innings and struck out six with only two walks and three hits allowed as he fell to 1-1 on the season.
At the plate, the Knights had chances with runners in scoring position and less than two outs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but could not scratch any runs across the board as the Lions held on to secure the win and the split.
Calvin finished its Florida trip with a 4-5 record following the split. Penn State-Altoona moved to 2-2 on the season.
COACH'S COMMENT:Â "Just a great week to figure out who we are and our identity," said Calvin head baseball coach
Kevin Van Duyn about his team after the first nine games of the season. "I thought we got some really strong starting pitching, and hitting over .300 as a team for the week was a solid start. We're looking forward to seeing how we can grow throughout the season."
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball returns to action on Friday, March 10, when it travels to Covenant College for the first of a three-game series.
