MARLBOROUGH, MA – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team lost in the second round of the ACHA Division 1 national tournament on Friday to Adrian College. The 8-1 loss ended the Knights national tournament run after beating the U.S. Naval Academy in the first round.
The Knights finish their season with an overall record of 23-8-3 and a 13-3-2 conference record.
Adrian was in control from the start. Adrian outshot Calvin 25-5 in the first period. Adrian's Sebastian Smith and Matteo DiGiulio both scored, putting Adrian up 2-0 early.
Defense was strong for both sides in the second, with Calvin only allowing 9 shots on goal, and Adrian allowing only 6. However, Adrian was efficient, scoring 3 times on their 9 shots. Samuel Spaedt scored the first two for Adrian, followed by Sebastian Smith, who also scored his second goal of the game.
Calvin went into the third period down 5-0, but continued to fight. After an early goal by Ethan Klemen of Adrian, Calvin's Josh Tak scored Calvin's only goal of the game while being assisted by
Lou Vesperini and
Maverick Baxtrom. Adrian's Dylan Gajewski and Henrik Overvall added two more goals to the total to make the final score 8-1.
Carlos Siso started in goal for the Knights, playing just over 43 minutes before
Garrett Walker came in as a goalie substitute. Siso recorded 31 saves on 37 shots while Walker recorded 13 on 15 shots.
The Knights achieved several highlights during the season including winning its first ACHA Tournament game at the Division I level on Thursday against the Naval Academy while also setting a program record for wins in a season as a Division I program.
