Calvin Hockey Coach Mike Petrusma Picks up 500th career Victory in Win Over Western

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team completed its series sweep of Western Michigan University on Saturday night, winning 7-6. The Knights improved their season record to 16-6-3.

Calvin jumped out to a quick lead in the first period. Keith Schenkel and Steven Ickes both scored within the first 4:18 of the game, giving Calvin a 2-0 lead. Ickes' came on a power play advantage for Calvin. Calvin was able to get 17 shots on goal in the first but were unable to get any more into Western Michigan's net.

Both teams' offense were flowing easily in the second. The first goal was scored by WMU's Brandon Clark only 1:30 into the period. Steven Ickes provided a quick response for Calvin, scoring his second goal of the game only 40 seconds later. Jacob Siebenga of Calvin added one more to grow Calvin's lead to 4-1 with 16:01 remaining in the period. The teams remained scoreless for the rest of the period until Justin Satawa of WMU scored with only 1:19 remaining. Calvin went into the third period with a 4-2 lead.

Western Michigan's offense found great success in the third. Helped by 8 Calvin penalties in the third, Western Michigan scored 4 goals in the final period. The goal scorers for WMU were: Jake Olinger, Gavin Hoover, Justin Satawa (his second of the game), and Travis Thorhaug. The Calvin offense also found success in the third. Jacob Siebenga and Keith Schenkel kept the game tied at 6 going into the final minute, both scoring their second goals of the game. In a penalty-filled final minute, with Calvin playing a man down, Keith Schenkel completed his own hat trick and scored the game-winning goal for Calvin. Schenkel's goal gave the Knights their 7-6 victory.

Greg Smith was in goal for the Knights and recorded 31 saves. The Knights outshot WMU 47-37. Both teams were plagued by penalties, with 11 for both sides.

NEXT UP: Calvin will play Roosevelt on Friday, February 10 on Roosevelt's home ice. They play a second game on Saturday as well.

COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Mike Petrusma – "We weren't very disciplined tonight. Too many penalties in the third period. We will take the win and move on."
