DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Calvin University baseball team split its doubleheader against Wartburg College on Monday, winning game one 9-2 before losing game two 4-3.
Calvin 9, Wartburg 2
Calvin starting pitcher
Connor Comiskey (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North) pitched five shutout innings in his collegiate debut to lead the Knights to a 9-2 win in the opener.Â
The Knights jumped in front on a
Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) single in the first inning, and then added four more runs in the second inning with the help of RBI-doubles from
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) and
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) to push the lead to 5-0.
That would be more than enough for Comiskey, who allowed only one hit and four walks while striking out five in five scoreless innings to earn the win.
The offense recorded 13 hits in the game, with
Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos),
Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins),
Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian),
Dylan Williams (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs) and Penn each finishing with two hits apiece.
Wartburg 4, Calvin 3
Calvin led for much of the way, but Wartburg came through with two runs in the seventh inning to score the walk-off win and the doubleheader split.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, Calvin scored twice in the third inning after Raymond was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and
Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.Â
After Raymond drove in Penn with a fifth-inning single to push the lead to 3-1, Wartburg answered with one run in the bottom half of the fifth off Reynolds, who started the game and weaved his way in and out of trouble to allow just two runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings.Â
The Knights still led 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, but an outfield misplay put the leadoff batter on third base, and Wartburg followed with a single and double off Calvin reliever
Jake Monroe (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) to come back for the win.
Penn led the offensive effort with two hits. Raymond drove in two runs with one hit.
Calvin moved to 2-2 on its season-opening Florida trip with the split. Wartburg moved to 1-3.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Overall it was a really good day for college baseball," Calvin head baseball coach
Kevin Van Duyn said. "Two good teams played good defense with good pitching. We got solid starting pitching from Connor and Matt, with Connor getting his first college win. We hit great in the opener with 13 hits."
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball returns to action on its Florida trip with a single game tomorrow (Tuesday, February 28) against Franklin at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
