GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a bad shooting night in a 61-54 loss to Hope College in the MIAA Tournament Championship Game at Van Noord Arena on Saturday.
Calvin (22-5) could not buy a basket for much of the first half, shooting 19.2 percent (5-26) from the field on the way to a 34-22 halftime deficit.
The Knights continued to struggle offensively for much of the second half and trailed 50-33 with 7:44 to play before they were finally able to get into a bit of a rhythm offensively as they played through
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) in the post.
Overway battled through the physical Hope (19-9) defense to get to the line, and also started to find open shooters and cutters as the Knights furiously cut into the Flying Dutchmen's lead. Calvin was finally able to cut the deficit into single digits with just over three minutes to play, and a
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) made a big three-pointer to cut the deficit to three (57-54) to cap a 14-3 run with 39 seconds remaining.
Hope held strong down the stretch, however, knocking down four more free throws to ice the game while the Knights were unable to inch any closer.
The Calvin defense held Hope to 39.6 percent shooting for the game, but the Flying Dutch received a big performance from Marcus Wourman with 18 points off the bench to go with 14 points from Evan Thomas.
Overway led the Knights with 22 points (16-17 from the free throw line), seven rebounds and four assists. Bult joined him in double figures with 14 points and made four of the Knights' six three-point field goals for the game.
NEXT UP: The Knights will now wait to see if they receive an at-large selection into the NCAA Division III Tournament during the Selection Show that takes place on Monday, February 27, at 1:00 PM.
