Calvin ACHA Hockey Team Canada Announcement

D1 ACHA

Petrusma and Siebenga To Help Lead Team Canada at ACHA World Cup of U. Hockey

The Calvin hockey program will be well represented when the ACHA 2023 World Cup of University Hockey Tournament takes place this April.

Team Canada will be led by Calvin ACHA (D1) head coach Mike Petrusma. Petrusma will coach one of his current players, Calvin senior Jacob Siebenga (Surrey, B.C./Surrey Christian HS) who was recently named to the Team Canada roster.

The eight-nation tournament will be held in Carta, Romania in April.  The tournament format is round robin play within each four-team pool, with the two best performing teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals.  Team Canada will face off against host Romania, Poland, and Czech Republic in Pool B, while Pool A consists of USA (also from the ACHA), Hungary, Slovakia, and Sweden.

This is the third time that Coach Petrusma will represent the ACHA abroad having previously served as an Assistant Coach (2012) and Head Coach (2014) of the ACHA Division 3 Selects team.  This edition, however, represents all divisions of ACHA Men's Hockey and its 400+ teams.  In addition to coaching the team, Coach Petrusma is also tasked with selecting the 22-man roster from the best Canadian players currently playing in the ACHA.

Siebenga meanwhile, will be making his first appearance with Team Canada at the World Cup of University Hockey Tournament.

At Calvin, Siebenga is a two-sport standout, serving as a high-scoring forward on the Calvin (D1) hockey  team's top line while also filling one of the top lineup spots with the Calvin men's golf team. His athletic schedule at Calvin extends from the opening days of the Calvin fall sports preseason camp through the end of April as he juggles his two sports.

Siebenga's two-sport story as a double-duty Calvin Knight can be read online at: Jacob Siebenga - A Double-Duty Calvin Knight

Siebenga's head coach is thrilled to coach him at the national level while also leading Team Canada. "It is truly an honor and a blessing to be able to coach this (national) team," said Petrusma who is an Ontario native. "Jacob is very deserving of this opportunity and it will be wonderful to have a familiar face and a talented one at that, on our roster. I know we are both looking forward to the tournament and helping represent our country."
