GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team completed its weekend sweep of local rival Davenport University, winning 3-1 in an intense game on Saturday. Calvin improved its season record to 20-6-3, and to 4-0 against Davenport.
Calvin was ranked 16
th in the latest national ACHA Division 1 ranking.
The first period was electric with great scoring chances for both sides. Both teams were able to get 10 shots off on goal in the first, but none found the back the net. The game remained scoreless at the end of the first period.
Ed Riordan was the story of the second period for Calvin, finding a way to beat the Davenport defense and put Calvin up 2-0. His two goals were scored with 9:16 and 3:36 remaining in the period and both were assisted by
Joel Dieleman and
Joshua Ernst. Jacob Demeter kept Davenport in the game, scoring with 1:57 remaining.
The Calvin defense, and particularly goalie
Garrett Walker, played terrific in the third period. Walker recorded 13 saves in the final period and the defense gave up not goals.
Krzysztof Petryla secured the game for Calvin, tacking on one final goal with only 16 seconds remaining, assisted by
Joshua Tak. The final score was 3-1.
Garrett Walker recorded a total of 29 saves for Calvin and gave up just one goal. Calvin outshot Davenport 35-30 in the game.
NEXT UP: The Knights will play Western Michigan University on Thursday, February 23 at Eagles Ice Center with a 6:30 p.m. puck drop.
