CHICAGO, IL. – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team completed a sweep of Roosevelt University on Saturday night, winning 3-2 after winning 5-4 on Friday night. The Knights season record improved to 18-6-3.
The Knights swept Roosevelt in their previous series, winning 11-2 and 8-2, respectively.
Calvin was ranked 14
th in the latest ACHA Division 1 national rankings.
Lou Vesperini was the first player to score in the game, putting Calvin up 1-0 with 16:40 remaining in the first period. Vesperini was assisted by
Maverick Baxtrom and
Christopher Bebelos.
Garrett Walker was in goal for Calvin and recorded 11 saves in the first period to keep the Calvin lead at 1-0 going into the second period.
Calvin once again struck first in the second period when
Joshua Ernst set up
Joel Dieleman for an important lead-extending goal with 11:33 remaining in the second. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the second, Roosevelt caught a spark and ignited, scoring two goals within 2 minutes and tying the game at 2-2. Roosevelt's goal scorers were Danny Bdzoch and Elliot Fafinski, respectively. The tie did not last long as
Jacob Siebenga of Calvin was able to score only 21 seconds after Fafinski's goal, which proved to be the winning score. Siebenga was assisted by
Krzysztof Petryla and
Ethan Best.
The third period was a defensive struggle as both teams were unable to score the puck.
Garrett Walker recorded 10 saves in the period for Calvin.
At the end of game Garret Walker finished with 30 saves for Calvin.

NEXT UP: The Knights will play Davenport University on Friday, February 17 at Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids, MI. The second game of the series will be played on Saturday on Davenport's home ice. The weekend series will be Calvin's final regular season games before the GLCHL playoffs.
