GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 10th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team continued its strong non-conference run with a 75-45 win over Wilmington College on Saturday at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (5-0) led from start to finish on the strength of its defense, which held Wilmington (4-3) to 27.6Â percent shooting from the field in the first half and 26.7 percent for the game.
The Knights opened the game on a 10-2 run and built its advantage to 39-19 heading into the halftime break.
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) led the all players with nine points at the half, while
Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) led the defensive effort with two steals and four rebounds to go with his six points.
The Quakers came out for the second half looking to be physical and pressured the Knights full court, but Calvin took advantage of their aggressiveness by going to the free throw line 17 times (making 10). The Knights led by at least 18 points the rest of the way and built its biggest lead of 32 late in the half.
The Knights dominated the Quakers in the paint and out-scored them 40-20 for the game. Wilmington swarmed Overway on the block, but the sophomore center still shot 8-12 from the field for 22 points and drew seven fouls that led to him shooting 6-8 from the charity stripe. Overway also grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.Â
Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, while
Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) led the Calvin bench with eight points. Â
After holding the Quakers to 26.7 percent shooting, the Knights have now held three of their first five opponents under 30.0 percent shooting from the field.
