CHICAGO, Il. - Calvin concluded its national tournament run, falling in a penalty kick shootout to the defending national champion Maroons of University of Chicago Friday afternoon in a Round of 16 NCAA III Tournament contest.
The high-paced contest concluded in a 1-1 overtime time with Chicago winning the subsequent penalty kick shootout 5-3.
Calvin concludes its season with an overall record of 18-2-2.
Calvin held the early possession and pressed the attack in the opening minutes but Chicago (11-2-6) scored the opening goal, converting on a counterattack with striker Ryan Yetishefsky sliding a left-footed shot from the left wing that slid just inside the far post to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of play.
Calvin nearly leveled the game in the 31st minute as a header by sophomore
Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) off a corner kick was headed for the back of the net but the shot was cleared away by a Chicago defender on the back line.
Calvin came out of the gates in the second half with a boost of energy and found the equalizing goal in the 58th minute as freshman
Foster Garrett (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) sent a cross into the six-yard box that was redirected into the net by sophomore
Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS).
Calvin nearly took the lead minutes later on a blast by Ryu that was parried over the bar by Chicago goalkeeper Will Boyes. Boyes made another key stop five minutes later on a shot by senior
Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Ryu nearly came up with a spectacular goal in the 78th minute, spinning free just outside the six-yard box and curling a quick left-footed snap shot that was saved at the near post by Boyes.
Neither team was able to threaten the remainder of regulation, sending the match into a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions.
Chicago had a chance to take the lead with under five minutes left in the second overtime but a shot by David Martin was kicked wide of the goal by Calvin goalkeeper
Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
In the closing seconds of overtime, Calvin nearly found the winner as Schau broke past a pair of Chicago defenders. Schau was hauled down from behind just outside the 18-yard box with nine seconds remaining. The Chicago defender was issued a red card but the move paid dividends for the Maroons as Calvin's subsequent free kick sailed over the bar, sending the match into a penalty kick shootout.
In the shootout, Chicago went first and converted its opening three kicks. Calvin's third kick was saved in spectacular fashion by Boyes to give the Maroons the edge. Chicago converted its fourth kick as did Calvin but the Maroons were able to seal the shootout win by converting their fifth and final attempt for the final 5-3 score.
Chicago finished with a slim 16-13 shots at goal advantage on the wind-swept afternoon. Wunder had six saves in goal for Calvin while Boyes had six as well for Chicago.
It marked the second 1-1 draw between the two sides as they had played to a 1-1 tie in a regular season match on September 27, also at Chicago's Stagg Field.
COACHES COMMENT: "It's a heart-breaker," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "I tip my hat to Coach (Phillip) Kroft and to the University of Chicago. They are a phenomenally talented team that is extremely well-coached. We seem to have battles with them year in and year out. We're kind of getting tired running into them at this round of the tournament but we have all the respect in the world for their program. At the same time I'm extremely proud of my guys. I thought we got punched in the mouth a bit early and conceded the early goal. After about 15 minutes I thought we flipped the script and started making their goalkeeper make some saves which he did. It's a tough pill to swallow. To some degree we feel that maybe we deserved a little more with the chances we created out there but Chicago found a way to get the result and congrats to them."
