Calvin ACHA D1 Hockey Edged by Ohio In Weekend Series Finale

ATHENS, Ohio.- The Calvin University ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team suffered its first loss of the season to the number-3 ranked Ohio University Bobcats on the road 4-2 Saturday night. The 14th ranked Knights are now 5-1 on the season, after splitting games with Ohio University this weekend.
 
Ohio struck first, scoring with 2:47 left in the 1st period. Ohio's Drake Albers knocked it in, assisted by teammates Will Cohen and Jack Glen. The first period was riddled with penalties. Three players for the Bobcats and two players for the Knights were forced to spend some time cooling off. Calvin ended the 1st period down 1-0.
 
In the 2nd period Ohio scored 3 goals and Calvin found the back of the net twice. Ohio's Blake Farrel scored twice, at the 19:08 minute mark and at the 14:18 minute mark. Kyle Vandusen scored for the Knights with 16:47 left in the 2nd to split apart Ohio's goals. The 3rd goal for Ohio was scored by Mathieu Ovaert with 8:12 left in the period. The final goal of the period was scored by Calvin's Steven Ickes with 4:39 left in the period. The score at the end of the 2nd would be Ohio 4, Calvin 2.
 
No further goals were scored in the 3rd period and 3rd ranked Ohio University was able to walk away with a 4-2 win over 14th ranked Calvin University.
 
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Mike Petrusma-"We battled hard all weekend. Splitting with a top 5 team at their barn is a big stepping stone for our season. Now we get ready for another top twenty program in Utah at home next week."
 
NEXT UP: The Knights face off against the University of Utah on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 PM. The Knights will host both games of the weekend double header.
