BAUER, Mich. - The Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team suffered a tough 3-2 overtime defeat at Grand Valley State Thursday night. The contest featured a pair of nationally-ranked opponents as Calvin entered the game ranked 10th with Grand Valley State ranked 11th.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after one period of play with Calvin's opening goal coming from sophomore
Krzyzstof Petryla on a feed from senior
Jacob Siebenga.
Neither team scored in the second period but both teams traded goals in the third, sending the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Calvin had a great chance to score the winner on a two-on-one but were denied and moments later the host Lakers went the other way to score and win the game. The loss drops Calvin to 6-3-0 on the year.
COACHES COMMENT: "We played a really good game but we were snakebitten," said Calvin head coach
Mike Petrusma. "Their goalie played well and we missed a two-on-one just before they scored on us in overtime. We have a big three-game homestand this week and we are looking forward to the challenge."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host the University of Alabama in games Thursday (6 p.m.) and Friday (6:30 p.m.) at Eagles Ice Center and will then host Oakland University on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
