GRAND RAPIDS Mich.- The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team ranked #10 in the nation, defeated the #20-ranked University of Utah 7-0 on Friday night at home. The Knights are now 5-1 on the season.
Calvin scored three goals late in the first period.
Joel Fonovic scored with 6:33 left in the first period and was assisted by
Justin Davis. Kyle Vandusen scored with 4:14 left in the first and
Adam Heard finished the period strong scoring with just 43 seconds left. The Knights ended the first period with a 3-0 lead.
Ethan Pool scored unassisted in the 2nd with 8:07 remaining in the period to give the Knights a 4-goal advantage. Scoring for the Knights in the 2nd period was
Steven Ickes, with 5:45 left in the period. He was assisted by
Joel Fonovic and
Noah Maine. Utah had 12 shots on goal but did not get anything past Calvin goalie
Carlos Siso.
Calvin's
Jacob Siebenga scored a minute into the 3rd period.
Justin Davis and
Krzysztof Petryla were there for the assist. The final goal of the game was scored alone by Petryla, with 7:07 left in the game.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach
Mike Petrusma-"We played an all-around game. We kept their shots to the outside. I know Utah will regroup so we will need to be ready to go tomorrow night.
