Calvin Men's Basketball Clamps Down on Scots in 71-51 Home Victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin remained unbeaten at home during the 2022-23 season with a 71-51 victory over Alma College Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.

The Knights used a late first half run and strong defense in the second half to pull away for the win, improving to 8-0 at Van Noord Arena this season.

Calvin (10-3 overall, 2-0 MIAA) is now tied for the lead league with Trine (12-1 overall, 2-0 MIAA) through one week of play in the MIAA season.

Freshman Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./McBain Christian HS) came off the bench to score 12 first half point on 5-for-5 shooting to spark Calvin to a 46-28 halftime lead. Winkle swished both of his three-point shots in the first half. Calvin trailed 19-12 early but gradually pulled into a 26-23 lead. Winkle then scored all 12 of his points in the final six minutes of the half to put the Knights in command.

Calvin limited Alma to 21.2 percent field goal shooting while connecting on 13 of 16 attempts (.813) at the free throw line to maintain the lead and close out the win.

Freshman Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) picked up his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Winkle finished with 12 points while senior Eli Sensenig (Grayslake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Calvin shot 40.0 percent from the field overall and held a 56-33 rebounding advantage.

COACHES COMMENT: "Our defense was pretty good, particularly in the second half against a team that can score quickly," said Calvin head coach Bill Sall. "We missed too many layups overall, but got a nice scoring run from Trevin Winkle in the first half. He is still learning how to play defense but he can definitely score points.  We've got some things to work on in advance of a big game next Wednesday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to rival Hope next Wednesday for an 8 p.m. game in Holland, Michigan.
