GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 3 men's hockey team won 4-0 against Davenport University on Friday night. Calvin followed with a 4-1 win over Davenport Saturday afternoon. The Knights improved their season record to 13-8-0.
On Friday, the Knights came flying out of the gate, scoring three, first period goals.
Myles Radersma struck first, scoring with 15:51 remaining. Radersma's goal was assisted by Harry Ottsen and
Drew Klomparens. Just over a minute of game time later,
Nolan Bailen took advantage of a power play opportunity and put the Knights up 2-0, assisted by
Myles Radersma. With 5 minutes remaining in the period
Brady Keats found the back of the net with an even-strength, unassisted strike to put the Knights up 3-0 at the end of the second.
Harry Ottsen and
Drew Klomparens would both be involved in another goal in the second period, with Ottsen scoring and Klomparens making the leading pass. They put Calvin up 4-0 with 5:15 remaining in the second. That would be the only score of the period as both the goalies played strong throughout the period.
Cody Rhodes of Calvin recorded 12 saves in the second period, after 16 in the first. Barrett Rosser recorded 14 second period saves for Davenport.
The defensive struggle would continue into the third period as both teams kept a clean slate in the final 20 minutes. Rhodes recorded another 10 saves and Rosser recorded 19.
Cody Rhodes would finish with 38 saves and get a shutout victory for the Knights. Calvin outshot Davenport 48-38.
NEXT UP: Calvin and Davenport will have their rematch this afternoon, January 28, at 3:30pm at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids, MI. Next weekend the Knights will have a weekend series with Michigan State.
