HOWELL, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division I hockey team rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Cleary Cougars Saturday evening to complete a weekend sweep.
The victory came 24 hours after the Knights had claimed a 7-0 win over Cleary in Grand Rapids.
Cavin (2-0-0) scored a pair of goals just two minutes into the contest. Lou Vespirini (Montreal, Quebec/Thunder Bay North Stars) assisted junior
Maverick Baxtrom (Longault, Ont./Edson Aeros) just 30 seconds into the game. Vespirini then got on the board himself a minute-and-a-half later.
Cleary (0-2) sliced the deficit in half with a goal four minutes in but
Ian Elkins (Courtice, Ont./Elliot Lake Wildcats) answered with a goal on assists from Kryzsztof Petryla (Krynica-Zdroj, PL/Waterloo Siskins) and
Jacob Siebenga (Surrey, B.C./Surrey Christian HS). The goal came on the power play.
Petryla came up with a late first period goal to make it 4-1 Knights.
After Cleary scored to make it 4-2, the Knights went back up three on a goal by freshman
Joel Dieleman (Brampton, Ont./Bradford Bulls).
Early in the third period, Siebenga got loose on a breakaway and scored to make it 6-2.
Andre Kilpela (Royal Oak, Mich./Motor City Hawks) provided the capper with a goal with eight minutes remaining.
Freshman
Gregory Smith (Sarver, Pa./Atlanta Knights) got his first start in goal and went the distance, making 21 saves.
Calvin held a commanding 59-23 shots on goal advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: "We were really disciplined in the game tonight," said Calvin head hockey coach
Mike Petrusma. "Cleary took a lot of penalties and we were 6 for 19 on the weekend with our power play. Overall, a great effort by the guys this weekend."
NEXT UP: Calvin will prepare for a weekend series with Aquinas next Friday and Saturday with both games for set for 7:30 p.m. faceoffs.
