WHEATON, Ill. - The Calvin men's basketball team was unable to hold off the Thunder of Wheaton College (Ill.) late in a 74-73 loss on Saturday night.
Calvin (7-1) fell behind 21-10 early in the game to the hot-shooting Thunder, but roared back over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.
Wheaton (7-1) shot 6-15 from beyond the three-point arc in the half, but the Knights countered down low with 10 points from
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) to give Calvin the three-point edge.
The Knights came out strong in the second half, as Overway continued to score down low and
Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) was everywhere on both ends to extend the Calvin advantage to 62-50 with 10 minutes to play.
The Thunder responded, however, with an 11-0 run over the next 90 seconds to cut the deficit to one and set up a frantic finish.
Calvin led all the way in the second half until the final minute, when Nick Schiavello tied the game 71-71 with a three-pointer with 56 seconds remaining. After another layup by Overway with 44 seconds to play to give the Knights the two-point lead, Tyson Cruickshank made a three-pointer from the corner with 19 seconds to play to put the Thunder back in front 74-73 for the first time since the 2:39 mark of the first half.
In need a basket in the final seconds, the Knights were unable to get off a shot as they committed their 16th turnover of the game, allowing Wheaton to escape with the win.
It was a clash of styles throughout the night, as Calvin outscored the Thunder 50-14 in the paint, but Wheaton shot 13-31 from beyond the arc and outscored the Knights 39-15 from distance. The Thunder also got the better of the Knights from the free throw line, making 17 of 22 attempts while Calvin shot 4-6.
Overway led Calvin with 22 points on 11-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds and two blocks. Egekeze added 21 points and four steals, while
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
