BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 3 men's hockey team won the first game of its weekend series with Ferris State in a thrilling overtime finish, winning 3-2.
The Calvin Knights' record improved to 7-6 on the season.
The Knights jumped out early and impressively in the first period. Gabe Sova scored first for the Knights, with 17:01 remaining. Sova's goal came on a power play opportunity.
Seth Crampsey added a second goal, with 14:15 left in the period. The score at the end of the first was 2-0, in favor of Calvin.
While the first period may have been dominated by the Knights, the Ferris State Bulldogs responded with tenacity in the second. Colton Cundiff started the comeback effort for the Bulldogs, scoring with 18:31 remaining. Sean O'Connor would later tie the game up at 2-2 with 13:09 remaining.
The third period was a defensive battle as both teams fought to score the winning goal. Defense would prevail as both team prevented each other from scoring. The score at the end of regulation was 2-2 and the game would go on to overtime.
In a sudden death overtime, the Bulldogs and Knights traded chances. The break in the game would come as
Keigan Oberski stole the puck, won a race to the net, and put the puck through the 5-hole and into the back of the net. The final score of the game was 3-2, with the Knights winning on the goal by Oberski.
Ryan Worosz was in goal for the Knights. The Knights successfully limited their penalties to only 3, preventing the Bulldogs from getting many great power play chances.
NEXT UP: The Calvin Knights and Ferris State Bulldogs will play again tonight, Saturday, December 3. The game will be on the Knights' home rink at Eagles Ice Center. Puck-drop is at 7:30 p.m.
