Calvin ACHA D1 Hockey Falls to Grand Valley State in GRSHOF Classic Title Game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team lost to Grand Valley State University 4-2 in the championship game of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame (GRSHOF) Hockey Classic on Saturday.
 
The nationally 10th ranked Calvin Knights had their record fall to 14-3-2 on the season.
 
The GVSU Lakers were dominant in the first period. The Lakers scored 3 goals, from Tristen Avoletta, Zach Kippe, and Andrew Dundas. The Laker defense was also dominant, holding the Knights to only 8 shots on goal in the first. The score was 3-0, in favor of the Lakers, at the end of the first.
 
The second period was defensive battle as both teams were held scoreless. The Knights held the Lakers to 15 shots while they were held to only 5 shots on goal.
 
The third period saw the Knights mount a comeback. Krzystof Petryla scored first, within the first minute, He was assisted by Jacob Siebenga and Kyle VanDusen. Kyle VanDusen would then score a goal of his own only 5 minutes later. Jacob Siebenga recorded his second assist of the night, along with Ryan Jagielski. Calvin's hope of a comeback would be stopped when Carson Korte scored for GVSU with 7:45 remaining, putting the Lakers up 4-2. This would be the final score of the game.
 
Carlos Siso was in goal for the Knights and recorded 35 saves. The Lakers outshot the Knights 39-26.
 
At the conclusion of the game, VanDusen was named to the GRSHOF All-Tournament Team.
 
NEXT UP: The Calvin Knights will get a rematch with Grand Valley State in a weekend series following the Christmas break on January 13-14. The first game on Friday is set to start at 7:30pm and be held at GVSU.
 
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach, Mike Petrusma – "Unfortunately we started slow and we mounted a comeback but the hill was too big to climb. We have had a good first semester and so the guys will be ready when we come back for second semester and the stretch run."
