ALLENDALE, MI — The Calvin ACHA Division 3 mens hockey team played a closely contested match with the Grand Valley State Lakers on Thursday night. The Calvin Knights ended up losing 3-2.
The first period was a defensive showcase with no goals for either team. Dominic Stankiewicz recorded 13 saves for the Lakers while Liam Austin recorded 8 for the Knights. The Lakers survived 1 penalty.
Grand Valley State got the scoring started in the second period. Justin Chevalier scored first with 16:55 on the clock. Eric Gal tacked on another goal for the Lakers with 9:11 on the clock. Lakers' goalie, Dominic Stankiewicz, recorded 17 saves in the period. Liam Austin recorded 7 in the period for the Knights. The score was 2-0 in favor of the Lakers at the end of the second.
The third period was won by Knights. After a quick goal by the Lakers' Chris Dundas with 18:46 on the clock, the Knights began their late comeback effort. Myles Radersma scored the first goal of the game for the Knights with 14:13 on the clock. Seth Crampsey scored soon after with 10:43 on the clock. The Knights were kept out of the net for the rest of the period and the scoreboard at the end of the game showed a 3-2 loss for the Calvin Knights.
Despite the score, the Knights outshot the Lakers 40-28. Dominic Stankiewicz of GVSU recorded a total of 38 saves. Liam Austin of Calvin recorded 25 saves.
NEXT UP: The Knights and Lakers continue their weekend series Saturday night, November 5, at 8:30pm. It will be a home game for the Calvin Knights as they look to rebound from a tough loss.
