Women's Basketball Closes Strong in 67-63 Comeback Win

CHICAGO - The Calvin University women's basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Colorado College 67-63 on Saturday on day one of the Midway Classic hosted by University of Chicago.

Colorado College (1-2) started strong and led 19-11 after the opening quarter, but Calvin (3-0) came back with 24 points in the second quarter to tie the game 35-35 heading into halftime.

Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) scored 11 of her 17 first-half points in the second quarter to keep the Knights in striking distance.

Colorado College began to build momentum in the third quarter as it out-rebounded the Knights 14-9 and grabbed six offensive rebounds, helping them regain the lead at 52-48 heading into the fourth period.

In the final stanza, the game looked to be drifting away from the Knights when the Tigers took a 63-56 lead with 5:26 to play, but Calvin dug deep and clawed their way back into the game.

Leah Harris (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) started the comeback with two straight field goals to cut the deficit to 63-60, and Sydney Cleary (Middleville, Mich./South Christian) followed with a three-pointer that tied the game 63-63 with 2:41 to play. The following possession, Timmer put the Knights ahead for good with two minutes remaining on a lay-up.

The Knights' defense would make sure those field goals were enough as it held the Tigers without a point over the final 5:26.

Calvin shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game, with Timmer leading the charge with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Harris added 13 points, while Sara Nealy (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) and Cleary finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Defensively, Calvin held the Tigers to 35.5 percent shooting overall and only 6-22 (27.3 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Colorado College pushed us in many ways, and we hope they have a great season," Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner said. "We have to work on physical toughness, and some of the detail work of how teams guard us. Having seniors really helps us down the stretch, but we don't win this one without Allie Mayes (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Valerie Dirkse (Vienna, Va./Marshall). Really strong efforts from both of them when we needed it. We have a great opportunity to be better tomorrow and we're looking forward to it."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's basketball returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, November 19) when it plays North Park on day two of the Midway Classic at University of Chicago.
