The Calvin ACHA Division I hockey team completed a successful weekend series against Purdue-Northwest, battling the Pride to a 2-2 overtime tie after winning the opener of the weekend series the night before 7-4.
Purdue-Northwest later won a shootout 2-0 to gain the extra point in the GLCHL standings.
The Knights are now 6-0-2 on the season.
Calvin took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game on a goal by freshman
Krzysztof Petryla as he deked the goalie with a move to the left and shot the puck in from a sharp angle.
Kyle VanDusen and
Jacob Siebenga drew assists on the play.
Calvin led 1-0 after one period but Purdue-Northwest tied the game 1-1 on a goal with 12 minutes left in the second period.
Purdue-Northwest then took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal with 30 seconds left in the second period.
With 11 minutes remaining, freshman
Lou Vesperini whipped home the tying goal on assists from
Quentin Stempfel and
Maverick Baxtrom.
Greg Smith got the start in goal and made 21 saves for the Knights. Purdue-Northwest goalie Cooper Olson collected 31 saves.
COACHES COMMENT: "We have to give their goalie credit. He played well," said Calvin head hockey coach
Mike Petrusma. "We had some great moments in this game but our effort at times, was lacking. We will get back to work on Monday to get ready to play Oakland."
NEXT UP: Calvin will now prepare for a weekend home and home series with Oakland University. The Knights will travel to Oakland next Friday for an 8:30 p.m. game and then host Oakland the following night at Eagles Ice Center at 7:30 p.m.
