GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's golf team kicked off its 2021 fall campaign in winning fashion Tuesday afternoon, finishing seven strokes clear of Cornerstone in a non-conference dual match at the Mines Golf Club.

It marked the second straight year Calvin has defeated its East Beltline rival in a non-conference match now dubbed the Calvin-Cornerstone Challenge.

Sophomore Chandler Sjoerdsma (Riverside, Ca./Martin Luther King HS) led the way with a round of 84 to claim medalist honors on the afternoon.

Senior Emma Dykhouse (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was second for Calvin and in the overall standings on Tuesday with a round of 86.

Sophomore Georgie Scholtens (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a round of 90 followed by junior Jerica Scharphorn (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) with a round of 93.

Sophomore Brandi Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) completed Calvin's lineup with a round of 107. Sophomore Katherine Lamer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) competed as an individual for the Knights and carded a round of 111.

COACHES COMMENT: "Although we didn't perform to our expectations, it was good to get in the first round of the season," said Calvin head women's golf coach Jerry Bergsma. "Each player had positive things to build on but each player also had moments of struggle on a difficult golf course. We are eager to get back to practice and prepare for an important tournament this weekend in Wisconsin."

NEXT UP: Calvin will compete at the two-day Battle on the Border Invitational hosted by Carthage College this weekend.
