The Calvin University Knights ACHA D3 Hockey Team were defeated by the Hope College Flying Dutchmen 5-2 on Saturday night.
Going into Saturday's game the Knights were still in search of their first win of the season. Unfortunately, for the Knights the Dutchmen had other plans for the evening.
In the first period both teams came out with high intensity and energy. The Dutchmen took early control of the game and put heavy pressure on the Knights back line. Around the halfway point of the period the Dutchmen found a way through the Knights defense to take the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later the Dutchmen found the back of the net on the powerplay to take the two goal lead. The Knights tried to crawl back into the game but could not get any momentum going in the offensive zone.
At the end of the first period the Knights found themselves trailing 2-0. The Knights were outshot 4-11.
In the second period the momentum began to shift in favor of the Knights. With about seven minutes to go in the frame the Knights got on the board with a goal from Will Weiss with the assist from Tanner Dey. Sadly, for the Knights two minutes later the Dutchmen brought their lead back to two goals. The Knights kept up the pressure till the end of the period but could not find the back of the net again.
At the end of the second period the Knights were trailing 3-1. The Knights were outshot 9-16.
In the third period the Dutchmen came out strong and within three minutes extended their lead further to three goals. About seven minutes later the Dutchmen made things worst for the Knights as they found the back of the net again to bring their lead up to four goals. The Knights got a goal back with about two minutes to go in the frame. The goal came from Nathan Pohl with the assist from Sam Boelema. Unfortunately, the Knights goal and momentum shift came too late and was not enough to make the comeback.
At the end of the third period the Dutchmen came out victorious over the Knights 5-2. The Knights were outshot 7-20.
Knights Goaltender Liam Austin finished with 42 saves on the night.
The Knights are back in action Friday, March 12th as they take on the Adrian College Bulldogs at 7:00PM.
