The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Western Michigan Broncos 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.
In the first period the Broncos came out strong and quickly took the 1-0 lead over the Knights within the first two minutes. The Knights responded about seven minutes later with a goal from Jacob Siebenga with the assists from Maverick Baxtrom and Kyle VanDusen. About five minutes later the Knights took the lead with a goal from Michael Iatridis with the assist once again from Baxtrom.
At the end of the first period the Knights found themselves in front 2-1. The Knights outshot the Broncos 21-15.
In the second period the Knights quickly extended their lead to 3-1 just two minutes into the frame with a goal from Michael Fatta with the assist from Harmen Vining. The Broncos got one goal back late in the frame to cut the Knights lead back down to one goal.
At the end of the second period the Knights were leading 3-2. The Knights outshot the Broncos 19-6.
In the third period the Knights took control of the game. About halfway through the Knights retook their two goal lead with a goal from Baxtrom. About two minutes later the Knights found the back of the net again. This time the goal came from Justin Davis with the helpers from Siebenga and Ian Elkins. The Knights sealed the game just three minutes later with another goal from Fatta.
At the end of regulation the Knights came out victorious 6-2 over the Broncos. The Knights outshot the Broncos 55-26 for the game.
Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene had a strong game with 24 saves.
COACH PETRUSMA: "We played well today! Our special teams really took over the game. Our power play and penalty kill teams were the difference. Josh Gruene gave us the goaltending we needed and it was a great way to end the first semester. We look forward to the second half of the season as we work towards a league championship."
